Car Strikes Pole, Ignites Blaze in Woodbury

Car completely destroyed after live wires fall; driver escaped.

A driver safely escaped a car fire that destroyed a vehicle and took down a telephone pole Sunday night, fire officials said.

Syosset Fire Department and Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department were called to the car fire at Woodbury Road near East Gate Road in Woodbury at about 8:31 p.m. Sunday, officials reported.

According to first responders, the car struck a utility pole that then fell on the car, tearing down live wires and igniting the blaze.

Emergency crews used a foam operation to extinguish the fire after LIPA crews deenergized the wires.

Responders said the driver was able to safely free himself from the vehicle but the car itself was completely destroyed. A car parked in a nearby driveway was also reportedly damaged.

A cause of the accident was not reported.
