'Deadbeat Dad' Pleads Guilty

Former Syosset resident Robert Sand agreed to pay $1.2 million in child support, reports say.

A former Syosset resident, once nicknamed "the most wanted deadbeat parent" by Health and Human Services, agreed to pay more than $1 million in child support Thursday after pleading guilty to criminal charges, according to Newsday.

Robert Sand, 50, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Islip to two counts of failing to pay child support from two separate marriages and agreed to pay $1,200,000, said the report.

Sand fled from three arrest warrants and lived in Thailand for almost 10 years as he escaped paying support for three children from two marriages, according to December reports. The act led the Department of Health and Human Services to reportedly dub him "the most wanted deadbeat parent."

Sand had been a target for prosecutors since 2002, according to Newsday. After being caught attempting to enter the Philippines without any identification in November, he gave himself up to officials, said the report. He was arrested on American territory Dec. 17.

"Mr. Sand wants to do the appropriate thing to set things right, and he's taken the first step in doing just that," Sand's attorney Glenn Obedin told Newsday.
