VIDEO: iSchool ROCKS!

Young people get a chance to find their voice.

"I pledge allegiance...to the band...of Mr. Schneebly...and will not fight him... for creative control...and will defer to him on all issues related to the musical direction of the band," recite Mr. Schneebly's students in the cinematic rock hit The School of Rock (2003), starring Jack Black. It's hard not to picture the disheveled, overweight, music-loving, fan-craving Black in this timeless flick when I enter iSchool of Music & Art.

The school, with locations in Syosset and Port Washington, gives music instruction to students as young as 4 up to adults. But it's the school's iBand program for children 7-18 that at first draws comparisons to the silver screen.

However, iSchool director Ken Benshish, in both build and style, is anything but Black. His passion for music, excitement for learning and enthusiasm for teaching is apparent at the first hello. I admit, I'm jealous. iSchool rocks!

A place for students to come together and learn various genres and styles, techniques and compositions, iSchool is ions away from my well-known, a cappella screeching, note-belting shower performances. And thank goodness for that! iSchool teaches musicians, creates musicians and employs musicians…there ain't no better way to learn.
