Photos: When 2,700 Burgers Meet Andre Dawson...

Syosset Baseball Association event honors player who succumbed to cancer.

Andre Dawson's journey to Cooperstown and his July 25 Hall of Fame induction stopped at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park Saturday during the Brian Murphy Memorial Day All-Star BBQ.

The Syosset Baseball Association event, which has been held for the past 20 years, honors a former Syosset Little Leaguer who died of cancer. Dawson signed everything from the average fare to a blue cast, but even the Hawk's gaudy career numbers paled in comparison what it takes to feed players and parents for a 12-hour day packed with play on multiple fields.

About 2,700 burgers and 2,500 hot dogs were on the menu, along with more than 1,000 servings of cotton candy. Baseball wasn't the only form of recreation, as a dunking booth, moon walk and the standard hill to roll down also helped pass time for siblings waiting for brothers or sisters to get done playing.

Sponsors, including Syosset Patch, were honored with plaques for their support of the Syosset Baseball Association. Patch would also like to thank everyone who signed up as users on the site.

The weekend is far from over for the Syosset Baseball Association.  The organization's Cooperstown team is holding a special fundraising event at Christiano's Sunday night at 7 p.m.

Coaches will be the bartenders and half the money from drink sales will go to the team.
