Syosset Teacher Wins $3 Million Lottery

Scratch off turns eighth grade educator into a multi-millionaire.

A Syosset teacher and Dix Hills resident is kicking off his summer vacation with a winning $3 million New York Lottery ticket.

Gregory Scheuerman, 34, has a passion for numbers as an eighth grade math teacher in the .

On June 25, a day after the last day of school, Scheuerman decided to purchase a “$3,000,000 Richer” scratch off, to celebrate his students’ 100 percent passing rate on the New York State Board of Regents exams. He bought the ticket at Huntington Card & Smoke Shop on East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station on June 27, and immediately realized he won the jackpot.

“I was in disbelief, and then I was ecstatic. I gave the guy behind the counter a hug and a kiss...He told me to calm down,” Scheuerman joked.

He claimed the ticket on June 27 and will receive his prize as $150,000 a year for 20 years. His annual net check will total $99,045. He said his plans for money include traveling the country and saving for his future.

“I’m going to do some traveling, pay some bills and put toward buying a house," he said.

The bachelor millionaire also said he will continue teaching.

“Got to keep those kids passing their regents,” he said.

Scheuerman celebrated his winning ticket with six other Long Island jackpot recipients at in Garden City on Thursday. Susan Machtinger, 62, of East Meadow, Gil Loais, 34, of Uniondale, John Miller, 66, of Locust Valley and brothers Jeffrey Vee, 45, and Alex Vee, 41, of Great Neck, along with two other winners from Brooklyn and Queens were awarded more than $12 million in lottery prizes.

While Scheuerman said he didn’t have any specific plans for the money, he said he is very much looking forward to his “summer paycheck.”

“It’s going to be a much better summer vacation,” he said.

The math teacher is the from Half Hollow Hills this month. The area has seen several major wins recently including , who took home the largest payout in Long Island history with a $200 million winning Powerball ticket, which was split amongst the group. Each took home $3.5 million after taxes.
