Two pedestrian deaths, broken apart by election day, dominated the headlines in Syosset this week.
Pedestrian Deaths
Oleksandr Safronov, a 15-year-old from Bethpage, tragically died Sunday. While skateboarding on the western shoulder of South Oyster Bay Road near Hicks Road, Safronov was struck by a southbound Chevrolet Impala. The impact threw Safronov into a fellow friend and skateboarder, also 15, who suffered a fractured ankle, according to Nassau County Police.
Just three days later, a Manorville woman was struck and killed on Jericho Turnpike near Woodland Gate at 9:05 p.m. Wednesday, according to police. Jennifer Jenkins, 26, had stepped into the street on Jericho Turnpike when she was struck by a 2010 Ford SUV traveling eastbound, police said. Jenkins was pronounced dead at the scene.
Election Day 2011
GOPs swept the races in the Town of Oyster Bay on Tuesday. The only Democrat to make it through was Judy Jacobs for the legislature.
Hannah Camhi Takes State Tennis Title
Syosset High School senior Hannah Camhi took the state title for tennis last weekend.
Veterans Day 2011
Syosset honored their veterans past and present on Friday for Veterans Day. One site of appreciation was the newly moved World War II monument at the Woodbury Firehouse.
