Building a Good Relationship

A young and talented architect is making Syosset more beautiful, one house at a time.

To say that Syosset resident Joe Vecchio is qualified is an understatement.

After receiving a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Pratt Institute, he went on to get his Masters in Real Estate Development at Columbia - but this is just the beginning of his accomplishments.

When you meet Joe you see an unassuming low-key person, but behind that façade is a tenacious and determined individual who gets the job done efficiently and effectively.

"It all started at a very young age with building blocks and a talent for drawing," Vecchio said.  "But what really got me interested in architecture and structures was when I was a teenager - my dad would purchase a building, a construction team would converge on the space doing all sorts of repairs and renovations. I would jump in and help out."

Most architects know only architecture, but Joe said he has a diverse knowledge of all things relating to the inner workings of buildings.

"Every job I had helped me glean expertise for the next challenge," Vecchio said.

He received several accolades after 9/11 by leading the disaster and structural recovery plan for more than 4,000 employees at American Express (located at ground-zero) which enabled the company to be up and running in record time.

"It took 10 months to complete which would be considered inconceivable for situations like this," he said.

After that, Joe managed the design and construction of a pediatric care center at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and from there Joe was hired at Estee Lauder as the Director of Retail Store Development.

"Flying all over the U.S., I oversaw the construction and fabrication of over 100 stores," he said. "Within my first year there I successfully opened 30 new stores."

As he was entrenched in the retail store projects, he was simultaneously gutting his ranch house near the train tracks.

"Luckily, I was working with a builder who was so competent and proficient that he was able to complete our house in five months -  Gideon Hodulick and I collaborated so well that we formed a partnership," he said.

The Vecchio home is now a showpiece on the block, which is evident when you view the before and after photos.

"It reached a point where I realized spending more time with my family was a priority," he said. " So having this alliance with Gidch Construction in the local area was excellent timing and an excellent fit."

Once you see what can be done to an ordinary ranch house you may get the renovation bug and use their services too.
