Give 5: Patch Visits the White Oaks Nursing Home

Syosset Patch spent Tuesday afternoon catching up on current events with residents.

At Patch, while we strive each day to deliver news, coverage and keep you in the know about hot-button local issues, all editors set aside five working days a year to give back to the community.

Through the "Give 5" program, Patch editors spend the day volunteering in their respective communities.

On Tuesday afternoon Syosset Patch spent the afternoon at the White Oaks Nursing Home in Woodbury to meet its residents and catch up on news and current events.

Next month, White Oaks will join other homes around the country and celebrate "Fulfulling the Promise - National Nursing Home Week" from May 8 to 13. The schedule of events includes square dancing, karaoke, a senior prom, an art show and other entertainment.

The home provides a number of entertainment options for residents every day, including bingo, blackjack, table games, trivia, book club, and more. Local school bands often visit residents to perform - students from Jericho Middle School visited last on April 5 to sing some songs to residents.
