Grab and Go: August 5-7

Here is our kids weekend planner.

The weekend is almost here and we’ve come up with a few fun ideas on how to keep the kids entertained.

1. The Wizard of Oz

Where/When: Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, 1395 Planting Fields Rd., Oyster Bay, 516-922-9200, nysparks.com., Friday August 5 @ 6 p.m.

2. Ocean Science Sunday: Kooky Compasses

Where/When: Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum, 301 Main Street, Cold Spring Harbor, 631-367-3418, Sunday August 7 @ 2 p.m.

Why Go: Learn about maps and compasses for journeys, for ages 5-12, reserve.

Pricing: $8.00.

3. Bug Safari

Where/When: Old Westbury Gardens, 71 Old Westbury Rd., Old Westbury 516-333-0048, August 6 @ 11 a.m.

Why Go: Join in the hunt for elusive grasshoppers, butterflies, insects and other creepy crawly creatures in the garden. Bring your butterfly net and collecting jars.

4. Summer Days at Nassau County Museum of Art

Where/When: Nassau Museum of Art, 1 Museum Dr, Roslyn, Tuesdays – Saturdays @ 12- 4 p.m. through August 25.

Why Go: Throughout the summer, families and children will enjoy exciting and creative afternoons at the museum. Summer Days at Nassau County Museum of Artis a new drop-in program that includes interactive tours of the exhibition of sculpture and photography by Robert Hite and supervised hands-on artmaking inspired by the exhibition. The program is designed for children ages 4-10.

Pricing: Free with museum admission.

5. Family Fresh Water Clinic

Where/When: Hempstead Lake State Park, Southern State Parkway, West Hempstead, 631-444-0283, Saturday August 6 @ 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Why Go: This is a family event where you can learn about aquatic environment, with education stations and open fishing.

Pricing: $8.00 parking, free with Empire Pass, must pre-register.
