Mommy, Me, and Nature Makes Three

The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery invites you to come by with your preschooler for an amazing freshwater journey, starting Thursday at 11 a.m.

Jump for joy Thursday morning as naturalist Steve DeSimone takes your children on a Pollywog Adventure at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery.  Every Thursday throughout January and February, you and your little tadpole can share this experience and learn about the aquatic life of New York.

Thursday's focus will be on frogs.  "Children will get to take an up close and personal look at these amphibians as I hold them out of their tank," DeSimone said. "We will also create a frog craft, sing songs, and I will read a book, generously loaned to us from the local libary, all about the subject matter."

"Each week the children will get to learn about our center while featuring an animal of the day from turtles to salamanders to snakes and frogs," he said. "We will also take the youngsters on a tour of the two aquarium buildings that contain several species indigenous to the New York State area."

In addition to this event, it's worthwhile to investigate the eight outdoor ponds where the hatchery is raising different types of local trout.  A new arrival is Lake trout.  And if there's time, Mr. DeSimone will perform a fish feeding demo which is always a favorite amongst the kids while they watch in awe as the water churns with activity.
