No Gas Getty in Syosset

"Rollin' Automotive" has been located in Syosset for 19 years.

Let's just say it's complicated.

Did you know that the former Getty gas station by the triangle at Split Rock road and Berry Hill road no longer sells or pumps gas?  It's not exactly Syosset's top kill but there is an environmental aspect to why Jeffrey Cipollina no longer offers gasoline at his station, the

"The EPA has a mandatory requirement that all gas stations switch to a new underground tank system, it's just not financially viable as a franchiser of gasoline," Cipollina said.

This is not an unusual story across America.  Many stations have had to close due to the high cost of converting to the new standards.

"Luckily, I have my auto repair shop as back-up," Cipollina said with a relieved look. According to Cipollina the deadline in Nassau County for the overhaul is 2015 and can cost upward into the six figures so if you don't own your property, it doesn't make sense for a small business.

Historically, this triangle of land was once a carriage repair shop.  It evolved into a Flying Ace service station and from then on it has remained a gas station.

Growing up on the "south side of the tracks" as Mr. Cippolina refers to it, makes him feel very connected to the community and he often hears stories about what took place many years before at this site from the older residents who enjoy reminiscing.

Mr. Cipollina has happily updated and changed the style of his shop to have a more retro appeal and in about five years he will be taking over the lease.

"I have been here for 19 years," he said. "And I have officially re-named my shop, ."

One of the many good things to come out of this: there will more room for his cars which should hopefully free up the sidewalk.

Here are some tips from Rollin' for winter car care:

1.  A simple check of tire pressure could mean a lot less pressure on your wallet.  Meaning:  better gas mileage and tire longevity.

2.  Oftentimes a false warning appears on the indicator lights which can be caused by the cold weather.  As you drive and the air heats up, the tire pressure can go back to normal.

3.  Over-inflation or under-inflation could mean serious issues for your tires.  And the last thing a car owner wants is a tire blow out.

4.   A nitrogen fill is one of the best solutions.  Used by truckers and race car drivers for over 20 years, this gas keeps the air stable in the tires therefore the pressure remains constant.  Rollin' has a nitrogen generator on-site and when you purchase tires, it is automatically included then and for the lifetime of the tires.
