Patch Picks: Stay-Cations

Why go away when there are so many cool things to do in your own neighborhood?

Spring break is coming soon and kids are going to be off from school with nothing to do.  With the economy down like it is, it’s not always easy to go on a long vacation somewhere exotic. But have no fear! There are great things you can do right around your neighborhood…you can have a great "stay-cation!"

You can go Rock climbing indoors! Island Rock in Plainview has a variety of different features including 30’ climbing walls, a hang board training area, 1000 different routes and even a sauna! They have calls for first time climbers and experienced climbers. They have youth programs for children between the ages of 7-15 every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights as well as the abilities to have parties there.

West John St and Cantiague Rock Rd, Hicksville

It’s a park, ice skating rink, and miniature golf course all in one! At this park you can do any of the four activities without a problem.  There are tennis courts, basketball courts, handball courts, and many athletic fields just ready for you to play a game on. The miniature golf course is an 18 hole golf course that is family friendly, especially for kids. Want to ice skate in the summer? No problem! The rink is indoors and is open all year round. The park is open Monday through Sunday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Are you an adult that wants a one day vacation from the monotony of work? Then come to the Oyster Bay Golf Course! The Course is an 18 hole regulation length. It is a bit difficult and will provide a challenge for golfers at any stage. There is also a driving range for those who just want to brush up on their swings.

This is great for the history buff in the family! Come see Theodore Roosevelt’s House and the way he lived. According to nps.gov “The most significant events took place at Sagamore Hill during the seven summers it served as Theodore Roosevelt's Summer White House, from 1902 until 1908. During that time, Roosevelt used his home to host luminaries from around the country and around the world.”

5. Planting Fields Arboretum & Coe Hall

1395 Planting Fields Road, Oyster Bay

This is a great place to go and have a picnic with the family, or with a romantic interest. Surrounded by plants, trees, and flowers, the Arboretum is mystical and a great place to let your mind just wander, your imagination cultivate. There are a variety of indoor and outdoor plants including 600 different kinds of azaleas, rhododendrons as well as other species. There are greenhouses that collect orchids, cacti, begonias and ferns as well as seasonal displays.
