Play An Instrument? Summer Community Band Seeks Musicians

While the band performs in Port Washington, members have included musicians from Astoria, Brentwood, Manhasset, Valley Stream and beyond.

Aaron Prindle is once again leading the Port Washington Summer Community Band, which performs Friday nights in July at the the John Philip Sousa Bandshell at Sunset Park.

Prindle, an elementary school band teacher in Port Washington, is inviting high school students and adults capable of playing high school caliber literature to join.

And you don’t need to be a resident to participate, Prindle said. Last year, musicians hailed from Astoria, Brentwood, Manhasset, Valley Stream and of course Port Washington.

The group’s first rehearsal is Tuesday, June 17, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. The musicians rehearse every subsequent Tuesda through July 22.

This year’s bandshell concerts are slated for July 4, 11, 15 and 22. In keeping with tradition, Sousa marches will be featured prominently.

There are still spots available in the band, especially low brass, percussion and flutes, Prindle said.

Prindle is no stranger to community bands. His father is the founder and long-time conductor of a the community band in Enumclaw, Washington, where Prindle grew up.
