Safety and Snow Shoveling

With the prediction of over a foot of snow, here's some helpful hints for the snow to go.

When you wake up on Wednesday there could be a significant amount of snow….AGAIN!  Here are some tips for effective and safe removal:

Prep with a stretch

Let’s face it, shoveling snow is a major workout and with that should come a warm up. Hold the shovel horizontally in front of you and gently swing from side to side, this light twisting motion will act as a back warm up.  Go through the motions like runners do, stretching will make all the difference.  It takes a few minutes but your body will thank you.

Back Preservation

We all know to shovel with a focus on using legs, with knees bent, to avoid back strain.  But for the best form and balance, keep feet hip distance apart and the shovel should stay close to your body.  As you lift the snow, keep your stomach muscles tightened.  Having a strong core will also avoid back issues.  Hold the handle with hands spread apart and don’t twist your body or throw the snow.

It’s all about the layers

Try to get outside as soon as possible, the more you wait the heavier the snow gets.  Starting from the top skim off a few inches at a time, by shoveling in layers, naturally the load will be lighter and easier to move.  If possible, don’t try to pick up a load from the bottom; wet snow can weigh as much as 20 pounds per shovelful.  Be sensible, if you are out of shape or have a health condition just don’t do it.

Take Pause

Shoveling snow can take a lot out of you so it’s important to take a break. Stop for a few minutes and enjoy the beautiful scenery.  Hydration is key, so take a sip from your thermal travel mug filled with a ‘warm’ non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic beverage.

Get the Scoop on Shovels

Home Depot in Syosset has been running low on most snow removal products but here are a few that should be available:

Ergonomic shovels with an S shaped handle or a shovel with a smaller blade (which require you to pick up less snow) can  save your back.

When the snow is just too heavy to move a push shovel with its rounded shape is an excellent option.

If you own a good quality snow blower this information is a moot point, you’ve got it made.  One important note:  it’s imperative that our local emergency vehicles have clear roads so be considerate and don’t throw or blow snow into the street.

Salt Spreader

Now that you have cleared as much snow as possible it's time for sidewalk salt.  Using traditional rock salt can work but the end result could be corrosive to concrete.  Instead try calcium chloride mixed with some sand.  After you have covered the major areas such as steps, sidewalks, and walkways, keep a small covered tub by your entry and spread as needed to avoid black ice situations.

Note:  For Nassau County residents, all non-life threatening situations such as stranded vehicles and downed trees call:  888-684-4274.  This number will remain active throughout the snow emergency period.

Stay warm, stay dry, and stay safe.
