Sleet, Freezing Rain Expected to Taper Off By Late Afternoon Across Region

New snow could be headed to the region Sunday, officials said.

Wednesday's morning blast of freezing rain and sleet is expected to wind down by nightfall, experts predict.

According to Pete Wichrowski, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Upton, snow moved in overnight and dumped three to five inches across Long Island and New York City.

Around daybreak, the region saw a transition to a mixture of sleet and freezing rain mixed with snow, Wichrowski said.

"That's what we're contending with now," he said Wednesday morning.

A few eastern areas remained warm enough for just rain, he added.

The precipitation is expected to taper off and move east by the afternoon hours, with just some scattered light rain or freezing rain and snow forecast.

During the later hours of the day, some dry times periods are expected, with only intermittent precipitation, and the system is slated to move completely out of the area by the evening hours.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 6 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Friday is expected to be dry, with a low pressure system passing through that calls for a chance of light snow. Later on Sunday, another low pressure system could bring heavier snowfall. "We'll have to keep our eye on that one," Wichrowski said.
