Snow Expected To Slam Area With Up to 14 Inches Tuesday

Up to 14 inches of snow will blanket Long Island on Tuesday, experts said.

A blast of wintery weather is expected to slam the Long Island and New York area Tuesday — with up to 14 inches of snow expected in some areas and arctic cold temperatures across the region.

According to Lauren Nash, meteorologist for the National Weather Service office at Upton, the forecast has changed dramatically since Sunday — and not for the better, she said.

Ten to 14 inches of snow are expected to wallop the Long Island area, with between eight and 10 inches forecast for New York City.

A winter storm warning was up around Long Island and New York Tuesday morning.

Flurries were beginning Tuesday morning around Long Island, with snow expected to gain intensity over the day, and the heaviest blast expected between 1 and 8 p.m.
Heavy, blowing snow and high winds will mean dangerous road conditions Tuesday night, with low visibility.

Snow will continue overnight and should taper off into light flurries by Wednesday morning, Nash said.

Temperatures will hover in the lower to mid 20s on Tuesday, dropping into the lower teens Tuesday night, with wind chills making it feel as though it's a frigid zero or below. Temps around Montauk will be a bit higher near the water, Nash said.

Highs on Wednesday will remain icy, in the mid to upper teens.

Wind gusts of between 30 and 40 miles per hour are expected across the entire New York and Long Island region.
