Sportime Zumba Raises Money for Children

In a dual charity effort and to set a world record, Sportime hosted an outdoor Zumba class last Saturday.

As part of a larger campaign to benefit the Children’s Heart Center at Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center, called for community support in setting the world record for the largest outdoor Zumba class last Saturday.

Two days before the event, the City of Brownsville in Texas officially set the first world record with a high of 1,223 participants. But prior to that, as of April 30, no official record had been approved.

“The real motivation here, more than beating the world record, is bringing in as much money in as possible,” said Jay Karl, Sportime Executive and General Manager of Sportime Syosset. “It’s a collaborative effort amongst Sportime and our community in support of a great cause.”

Led by Zumba instructor Dorie Wexler, the event, which took place from noon to 3 p.m., lured in dancers of all ages and fitness levels.

“It’s a great idea, Zumba’s so much fun,” said Syosset resident Kathy Bell, who works for Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center. “I think people will really appreciate it. The children are in the hospital for so long. They need the help.”

The event raised $1,000 in ticket sales alone. Funds collected from raffles, which will be extended until Friday, is estimated to bring in another $500.

But the world record will have to wait. The event drew short with only 47 total participants.

“I still think it’s worthwhile,” said Bari Hertz of Syosset. “I think everyone who takes the time to come out for a charity event has a good heart.”

Officials also kept their spirits high.

“It was for a good cause, so either way it was a success,” said Rene Bond, Sportime Syosset Sales and Membership Director.

“The praise goes to all of those people who came out to participate and support the event," Karl said. "I think that really says it all.”
