18 Students Named National Merit Finalists

18 Syosset High School students were named finalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

According to the district, this is the highest amount of students to ever achieve the honor.

Syosset Catholics Praise Pope's 'Courageous' Resignation

Syosset Catholics are surprised but impressed by the news that Pope Benedict XVI would step down at the end of February.

The Pope announced his resignation in Latin at Sunday's mass in Rome.

Chipotle Opening Date Revised

Chipotle Mexican Grill will open their doors in Syosset on Feb. 21, according to company representatives.

Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. media representatives said the eatery, located at 410 Jericho Turnpike, is scheduled to open next week.

Cops: 7 Burglaries Reported

Seven burglaries were reported by police last week in the Syosset area.

Nassau County Police reported three commercial and four residential break-ins around the Second Precinct within one week.

Jacobs Thrilled by Suozzi Exec Candidacy

News that Tom Suozzi will enter the race for Nassau County Executive has thrilled area democrats, including Nassau Legislator Judy Jacobs.

"I cannot for the life of me think of a more qualified person than someone who already took this county from close to bankruptcy to getting 13 bond upgrades," said Jacobs, D-Woodbury.

Labriola To Step Down

Oyster Bay Town Clerk Steve Labriola is resigning his post to join the Nassau County Comptroller's Office, officials said.

Labriola is expected to step down some time this week and is set to become the chief deputy to Nassau Comptroller George Maragos, according to a Jostyn Hernandez, a spokesman for the comptroller's office.
