Syosset Week in Review: Mall Talk Heats Up

Two developers lean the fate of their respective projects.

It was a sizzling summer week in Syosset. And no, we're not talking about the weather.

Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto kicked off the week Tuesday by fanning the flames of the long-running feud between the Town of Oyster Bay and the developer of a proposed mall. The company is pushing for a referendum on the mall.

"They are clearly perverting the wording of their questions about the referendum for their own profiteering," Venditto said of Taubman Centers, Inc., which for nearly two decades has been fighting the town to build their mall.

A State Supreme Court in Mineola ruled Thursday that there were sufficient signatures on a petition to move ahead with a referendum on Aug. 20.

Meanwhile, another Syosset developer was shot down on Nassau's most debated project. Ed Blumenfeld’s $180 million design for a renovated Nassau Coliseum and reimagined Hub was not chosen as a finalist.

Did we mention it was hot? Syosset firefighters were called into action on two high-profile fires. The department put out a house fire that broke out on Meadow Lane Tuesday morning.

Firefighters also extinguished a propane fire at a warehouse used to distribute Snapple beverages early Thursday.

Don't get overheated. Weather forecasters are calling for a real scorcher in the week ahead.
