The Great Escape: Spend a Day in Oyster Bay

Whether arriving by train, plane, boat, or automobile, feel like a tourist in nearby Oyster Bay.

Here's our weekly hourly getaway for folks who enjoy historic town exploration. For today's escape we are taking you on a walking tour of downtown Oyster Bay.

But first you should make your way to the , located at 102 Audrey Avenue, to pick up your complimentary tote. Inside you will find a folder filled with discount coupons to participating restaurants and retail merchants, historical location brochures, and area maps.

While there, check out the museum and pick up an "electronic wand" for a self-guided audio walking tour to the many noteworthy attractions such as the Oyster Bay Historical Society/Earle Wightman House, Raynham Hall Museum, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, and . There are at least 30 points of interest to note. Just leave your license behind in exchange for the wand and pick up your I.D. when you are finished.

Don't feel like driving? Oyster Rides taxi is offering a mini-van shuttle service perfect for visiting the outlying points of interest such as Sagamore Hill, Planting Fields Arboretum, and the Theodore Roosevelt Bird Sanctuary. Pay-one-price of $15 ($8 for children five to 10 years of age and free for under 5) for their pick-up/drop-off service every half hour to and from each destination. Friday's are an especially great day to stop by. Besides enjoying the flavor of the town you can pick up local fruits, veggies, honey, soaps, plants, and more at the farmer's market located on the same block by the Visitors Center.

For the history buff, check out all the YouTube videos created by the town that correspond to the numbers listed on the history walk brochure found in the tote bag. 

This program, which started on Memorial day, will run through Labor Day weekend on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10AM to 4PM.
