The Great Escape: Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary

It's Kids Night Out at the sanctuary, but you end up with three hours to yourself.

Today's escape will take us on a journey to an exclusive after hours event at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center.

Established in 1923 as the first Audubon songbird sanctuary in the nation, this nature preserve is worth a visit on any day of the week. The aviaries feature 17 beautiful non-releasable birds of prey, which include hawks, owls, falcons, and a vulture, as well as several species of reptiles and amphibians all situated on 12 acres.

On Saturday, June 11 drop off your children at 6pm for some nighttime exploration starting with nature games, a viewing of a nocturnal animal up close, a late day hike, crafts, snacks, and ending with some fireside fun.

During the summer, they have scheduled a Naturalist Movie Series taking place at the Oyster Bay Library on the first Wednesday of every month beginning at 6:30 PM.  On July 6 and Aug. 3 they will be showing family appropriate films such as Ferngully and The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, respectively.  Stay tuned, in September and October there will be environmental documentaries for mature audiences. At each viewing a sanctuary staffer will be present to discuss the movie and how it relates to the environment.
