The Great Escape: Tour Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory

Here's something to do for moms.

Your teens are at band practice at the high school. The grandparents volunteered to take the toddlers to a movie in the afternoon. Your grade-school kids have tennis lessons on Wednesday evenings.  Now it’s your time. Take it.

Each week we are here to tell you about one great idea to give you a much deserved break, make your life a little less stressful, and maybe a touch easier for an hour or two.

Today’s escape is about heading over to Cold Spring Harbor on Saturday after you drop the kids off at Stillwell fields for soccer. In case you had your fill of beauty treatments and want to flex your noggin check out the tours offered at CSHL (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory) http://www.cshl.edu/.

For $5 and a reservation, you can take an hour and a half tour with a well-versed guide, who is generally one of the scientists.  Not only will you walk away having learned about the amazing things they do, but you will get a chance to see the splendid historic architecture.

The tour will end at their newly renovated Italianate library, and it is here where you can spend some time viewing the exhibits. Remember to wear comfortable shoes because not only will you enjoy the harbor vistas, you will also get a good dose of exercise on their hilly terrain.

Additionally, if you love viewing gardens and appreciate rare specimen trees there is a tour map available for the Bungtown Botanic Garden arboretum walk.

Click on their website under Public Events to find out about tour dates,  special events, concerts, fascinating free public lectures, and many more happenings that help support CSHL.

The next walking tour is on April 2 at 10am and the next lecture is taking place at 7pm on April 4 (space is limited so make sure to RSVP).
