Couple Sponsoring Baseball Newsreels

Cinema Arts Centre to show rare footage of many baseball greats.

A Woodbury couple is lending their support to a showing of rare newsreels featuring big moments in major league baseball.

Bob and Sandy Friedman are sponsoring the July 24 program at the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington.

The films are from  the Hearst Metrotone News Collection at the UCLA Film & Television Archive. The material was organized by David Filipi, director of the film/video department at Ohio State University, who will answer questions after the showing and participate in a reception in the Sky Room Café.

The footage includes Stan Musial’s 3,000th hit (at Wrigley Field), Babe Ruth’s last game as a regular (1934), Jackie Robinson relaxing at home in 1956 after his final season with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Roy Campanella: Portrait of Courage (1958) and Sandy Koufax’s retirement press conference in 1966, a Hollywood charity game with Buster Keaton and Jack Benny. A total of about 120 minutes of footage will be shown.

Sandy is a retired special education teacher at Huntington High School and CAC board member. Bob, a developer and owner of hotels and a minor league baseball team, has a significant collection of baseball memorabilia.

The program will start at 7:30 pm at Cinema Arts Centre, at 423 Park Ave, Huntington.
