Guitarists Put the Cool in CoolFish

Check out live music on Thursdays and Fridays.

Most Syosset locals know CoolFish for its spectacular seafood dishes and professional service.  Some of you even know that owner/chef Tom Schaudel wrote Playing With Fire: Whining and Dining on the Gold Coast. For people who work at North Shore Atrium in Syosset, it's the place to go for happy hour or for an afternoon cappuccino.

But for the Thursday and Friday night regulars, CoolFish is the place to hear classic rock by two of Long Island's finest acoustic guitarists, Erich Glaubitz and Mike Dorio.

On Thursday nights, Erich plays from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. He is very popular with the Atrium crowd and manages to keep them there long past happy hour with classic rock hits by The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, Jim Croce, The Police and many others. He is an accomplished musician, having written music for Cablevision, CNN, ESPN, Fox and Saturday Night Live. He also plays with his own band, Yellowfly, regularly.

Mike Dorio, another extraordinary guitarist, plays on Fridays from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Mike's credits include playing Broadway shows and arranging for touring bands. He also teaches music locally at his studio in Oyster Bay. Many of his fans arrive early enough to get in a set before being seated for dinner. Others choose to dine at one of the tables in the lounge area, at the communal table, or at the bar itself.

Mike plays classics by popular artists like James Taylor, John Mayer and Paul McCartney during the dinner hours, but later in the evening you can expect to hear anything and everything, from AC/DC to Zebra.

The bar menu is impressive and reasonably priced, with special daily appetizers and a raw bar. Included in the bar menu are Crab Cake Sliders, Rock Shrimp Fritters, Cornmeal Chipotle Calamari, Grilled Flatbread Pizzas and an Artisanal Cheese Plate. The martini menu is extensive, as well, but the house favorite is Mark's Vodka.

Mark, the bartender, prepares his signature drink weeks in advance by soaking fresh coconut, pineapple and strawberry in vodka.  When he deems it ready, he serves it on the rocks.

If you live in the Syosset area, are you are probably no stranger to CoolFish's fine contemporary cuisine. You know that reservations are an absolute must on weekends, and that the wine list is extensive.

But don't forget Thursdays and Fridays, when Erich and Mike help keep the "cool" in CoolFish.
