Syosset High Hosts Art Show at Walt Whitman Museum

The Mural Club's second annual art event was a success.

Where’s a better place to celebrate the arts than in the home of a world-renowned poet?

The Mural Club's second annual art exhibit show started on Saturday and runs until Tuesday at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Museum in West Hills.

Some of the original pieces are eligible to be sold for reasonable prices during a week-long auction. All proceeds from the event will go to First Tee, a program that enhances children’s values through golf, and to preserving the Birthplace Museum itself.

The gala opening Saturday was a major success. Students, teachers and parents from the community attended to observe the talent of these budding young artists. Food and beverages were provided for a $10 fee, and guests enjoyed poetry readings and music by Syosset’s own string quartet and jazz band.

Elora Weil was one student artist who attended the opening festivities.

“It’s an honor to be in the art show," Weil said. "I have two digital photography submissions this year. It’s a wonderful experience to share my work with other artists and to see the fantastic talent of other Syosset students.”

The event has been organized for the past two years by club advisor Damon Tommolino, along with Rohini Rudra, a junior at Syosset High School and president of the Mural Club.

“I think that this is a great experience for all of the aspiring artists who attend Syosset High School," Rudra said. "It allows their talent to be recognized.”

The exhibit will only be displayed for a short amount of time, so see it while you have the chance.

The Walt Whitman Birthplace Museum is located at 246 Old Walt Whitman Road in West Hills. For more information, please visit the Museum website.
