Teens Perform at Fourth Open Mic Night

The event at the Syosset Public Library drew talent in different forms.

Standing in a bright spotlight onstage in a dimly lit auditorium, teenagers let their voices be heard at the at the

Talents of all kinds were showcased in front a live audience.

"We have a variety of performers that include a comedian, singers, a violinist, pianist and a guitar player," said Sharon Long, Teen Services Librarian for the Syosset Public Library. "It is a great evening for teens to express themselves and have fun. Many of the teens here tonight are repeat performers."

The night began with Ariel Sobel reading a poem she dedicated to her grandmother who was celebrating her 82nd birthday today. Sobel's works have been awarded by Poets Laureate and she won second place in a Princess Ronkonkoma exhibit. Her writing pieces are published in Young Voices: An Anthology of Poetry by Nassau County Students.

Strumming his guitar strings and singing a capella was Mitchell Yaglom. He performed Everything by Michael Buble.

Syosset High School student Stephanie Cohen sang Good Morning Baltimore to the crowd's enthusiasm. With parents and friends cheering her on, she belted out the famous tune from Hairspray.

Seventh grader Tyler Cohen from the l played 'You Give Me Fever' on the saxophone.

Philip Jang played La Folia with great precision on his violin. He is a member of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. Arielle Mendelson sang a German song titled Mein Dein Lieb and Fall For You by Secondhand Serenade.

Bringing laughter to open mic night was comedian Stephen Egert. His comedy routine was inspired by television host Jimmy Fallon. One of his jokes included - What is a romance between two bushes? Bill Clinton's second term. His jokes resulted in thunderous applause and laughter.

Evengelina Plunkett ended the evening singing Miley Cyrus 'The Climb.' With open mic night being the perfect platform for teenagers to be heard, many in attendance were eager to find out the date for the next chance to perform.

"We haven't confirmed a date yet but we are planning to have another. Open Mic Night has been working out pretty well and the teenagers can't get enough of performing onstage," Long said.
