The Great Escape: Come to a Feast in the East for the Week

The Church of Saint Rocco is holding its annual feast and carnival in honor of their patron saint.

Today's escape will take us to Glen Cove for an almost week long carnival including live entertainment, rides, games, raffles, religious masses, and food and more food.

To find this "Little Italy on Long Island" take Northern Boulevard to Glen Cove Road, bear right on Cedar Swamp Road and follow the signs or the scents to Third Street. Everyday starting tomorrow, Tuesday July 26 until July 31, you can drop by every evening to find something to please your palette.

Nightly, feast your eyes and taste buds upon the Pastry Pavilion and consume luscious Italian desserts: cannoli, rum baba, sfogliatelle, pasticiotti, along with fresh espresso and hot or chilled cappuccino.

After you acquire your treats, directly next to the tent you can enjoy live entertainment with an Italian flair by the outdoor bandstand.

Check out the various vendors selling their wares such as clothing, crafts, toys and more. Besides the layers of desserts, you can also taste various Italian savory specialties.

On Saturday starting at 1pm, they will hold Children's Day. In addition to all the rides and attractions, your kids can enjoy a reptile show plus  music and cheer-leading performed by middle and high school students.

Masses will be held throughout the week but the pinnacle will be the solemn procession with the statue of St. Rocco. Following the bi-lingual (Italian and English) mass on Sunday at 10:15, parishioners and the marching band will walk with the statue - cloaked in a robe of gold adornments - and proceed along the local streets.

For over three hours Father Elias, the pastor of the church, will lead the way throughout the neighborhood, visiting and praying with the sick and home-bound. Oftentimes donations are added to the cape or at the base of the statue.

This heavily orchestrated event has been going on for over 37 years and a lot of planning took place to make the feast possible as over 300 parishioners will have volunteered their time by week's end.

Hours: Tuesday through Friday from 6pm until 11pm; Saturday 1pm until 11pm; Sunday 3pm until 10pm.

Rides:  POP specials offered Tuesday through Saturday all night and on Saturday from 1pm until 6pm.
