The Great Escape: Dancing in the Street

Now that Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing is over, you can conveniently fox trot your way down to Oyster Bay.

Today's escape will have you twirling over to downtown Oyster Bay for an event that is in full swing. Come by for some dance lessons, a demo, and a chance to cut a rug under the stars.

Stop by the bandstand by Audrey Avenue, across from Town Hall every Friday in August, weather permitting, to enjoy some Dancing in the Street from 7pm until 9pm.

This event is open to everyone so you may see grandparents dancing with their grandchildren, teenagers swaying to the beat, or couples enjoying a night out.

Mark you calendar for the next two Fridays:

August 19: the multi-talented DJ Louis Del Prete will spin Latin and ballroom style music while giving dance instruction.

August 26: The Scofflaws, a live four-piece band from Huntington, will play an eclectic dance mix as Bliss Studio sets the music to dance steps.

All you need to bring is some rhythm, a pair of dance shoes (or comfortable sneakers), and a good attitude.

This new event, brought to you by the Oyster Bay Main Street Association, is free and the street is closed off so that you can move about freely.

The first Friday over 100 eager-to-learn pupils came out to strut their stuff. If all goes well, they hope to make this an annual event, so take steps to make sure that happens and head north to the bay.
