The Great Escape: Tuesday Eve in Oyster Bay

This north shore hamlet is the place to be every Tuesday night in the summer.

Here's our weekly hourly getaway for busy moms and dads who may need some time for themselves.

Today's escape starts with something you "auto" check out - I know what you are thinking, "Oh please, gimme a brake!"

Every Tuesday night motor over to downtown Oyster Bay for Classic Car Cruise Night. It's the best block party around. Audrey Avenue is closed down from 5pm until 10pm and the streets are loaded with spectators cruising along by foot, checking out all the hot-rods, classic cars, exotic sports cars, and motorcycles.

Towards the middle of the block you can dance to live music and do a bit of shopping too; a few stores stay open late that night. If you need a coolant, stop off at the end of the block at a cute little shack and try some Bonanza Italian Ices; treat yourself to one of their famous creme ices. They have been serving up delicious scoops in Oyster bay since 1897.

During the height of the season, crowds can reach upwards to a thousand milling about looking at a kaleidoscope of cars in rainbow colors lined up on both sides of the street. Some automobiles can also be found in parking lots off the main drag.

Admission is free for pedestrians and $5 for each car. For parking, there are municipal lots located behind the stores. But the largest lot is behind South Street (Route 106) as you come into town. Enter by Summit Street or East Main Street.

Classic Car Night ends on September 27 so you will have many opportunities to check out this lively event.

When you have finished with the circuit, be sure to head over to Jack Halyards for a bite and to enjoy Tuesday open mic night. Bring your voice and or your instrument and perform alongside guitarist Mike Dorio. By the end of the evening you will be pleasantly surprised as the stage turns into a jam session overflowing with guitarists and vocalists.
