Cops: Man Assaults Off-Duty Paramedic on Cold Spring Road

Hollis man attacks ambulance medical tech who tried to help him, report police.

A Hollis man faces assault and endangerment charges after Nassau County Police said he attacked an off-duty paramedic that tried to help him.

An off-duty ambulance medical technician saw Randolfo Catu, 43, of Hollis, stumbling into the street on Cold Spring Road at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, police reported.

The unidentified Nassau AMT, 56, called 911 to ask for help after he said he saw Catu almost fall several times into the roadway, cops said.

Angered, Catu then allegedly shoved the AMT into the street and punched him several times, cops reported.

A 39-year-old witness saw the struggle and held Catu down until police arrived, detectives reported.

The AMT was treated at a nearby hospital for his injuries, including a wound on his hand that needed stitches, cops said.

Catu was also hospitalized for evaluation, police said.

Catu is charged with second-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangerment. He will be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.
