Bites Nearby: Cassis in Plainview

With Cassis, France seems like only a drive away.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

Overview: This restaurant is a very adult restaurant and probably wouldn’t be that great for a family with children unless they were older children.

Decor: The restaurant is brightly lit with yellowish colored walls. The lights are on the walls which make the walls look brighter and more inviting. The seats are very close to one another and it could feel like you are a little too close if there are a lot of people. The furniture is dark, dark wood for the chairs and dark lining for the booth. The seating is set up for only two people but the tables can be pushed together to fit more people.

Drinks:

  • Wine.
  • Mixed drinks.
  • Soft drinks for the underage crowd.

Appetizers:

  • Beignet de Crabe: Crab cake served with mixed greens, capers, shallots, cornichon and herbs in a tartar sauce
  • Tarte aux oignons et Chèvre: Caramelized onion tart served, with goat cheese and tomatoes over greens
  • Escargots Maître d’Hôtel: Snails with garlic herb butter Sauce
  • Oeufs en Meurette: Poached egg in red wine reduction with pearl onions, mushroom and bacon, over toast points

Entrees: The Entrée names are in French, as with everything else, but thankfully their descriptions are in English so even if you don’t know what the name is, you’ll know if you like it or not by the description.

  • Steak Au Poivre Vert: This is a New York strip steak with fresh green peppercorn sauce, potato gratin and vegetables. This meal is amazing. The steak is cooked exactly the way you ordered it, perfectly arranged on the plate with the vegetables, potato gratin and the vegetables. The peppercorn sauce was a bit spicy but not too much that it’s too hot to handle.
  • Côte de Porc Panée: Breaded center cut pork chop paillard sautéed and served with artichoke hearts, cannellini beans, roasted red pepper and potatoes. This is another very colorful meal. The breading on the pork gives it the extra zing that some people like and the array of vegetables compliment the meat. The vegetables could be a little more flavorful but tasted fine just the way they were.

Salads:

  • Salade Caesar Traditionnelle: Traditional Caesar Salad
  • Salade Frisée Aux Lardons: Frisée lettuce served with poached
  • Egg and Crispy Bacon
  • Salade Niçoise: Tuna, olives, tomatoes, string beans, onions, potatoes, sliced egg and lettuce.

Soups:

  • La soupe Gratinée à l’oignon: Onion soup with crouton and cheese gratin.

Desserts: An array of French pastries, coffee, and tea.

Service: The wait wasn’t too long and the staff is beyond friendly as well as very knowledgeable about the wines. They can tell you the difference between the wine even if it’s a very, very small difference. Though sometimes the staff is hard to get to because they are so busy, they try their best to stop by and make sure everything is okay with your food. They are prompt with bringing out the food and making sure it’s exactly what you ordered as well as exactly how you ordered it.
