The Black Wolf Survives Jackson Ave Construction

After all the festivals this weekend, take a break and watch a few games at The Black Wolf, which despite the orange cones, is still open.

Chef Barret Beyer emerges late on a Tuesday night from the kitchen of the Black Wolf Bar and Grill eager to speak about his craft, telling all needed to know about they work hard to bring something new and exciting to its crowd with honest passion and an ever-expanding arsenal.

has made it difficult in recent times, as Beyer says some passersby take the restaurant to be closed, when in fact it has been cookin' up some serious good times.

The menu was recently revamped and narrowed down to five entrees, three burgers, a comprehensive list of interesting appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, and wraps.

The restaurant features fresh specials every week, which Beyer says is often spontaneously chosen by special requests by customers.

After the main course, be sure to see what's up for dessert, as the restaurant sells Junior's Original Cheesecake, and often the specials feature creme brulee and tiramisu, both homemade.

The vibe at the Black Wolf is much in part attributed to Beyer, who began cooking at the age of 13 and fell in love with the craft while working at a firehouse on Governor's Island as part of his Coast Guard enlistment.

"I started with basic stuff, like eggs and bacon," explained Beyer who will graduate from culinary school at the Star Career Academy on November 7th.  "Then, as I learned more I decided a wanted to pursue this as my career."

When Beyer immersed himself into the culture of professional cooking, what he wanted to pursue as a career quickly became his life's passion, which he attributes to a gig at One North Steakhouse in the Hampton Bays with Chef Chris Cariello.

"I really learned to stand out there, to make something different," said Beyer.  "If I can create something that somebody says is the best thing they've ever had, what's better than that?"

One of the many somethings different is the Black Wolf's new food challenges. Two weeks ago, they , where contestants had to finish 12 wings coated in a sauce as hot as pepper spray. Keep a look out for their next challenge, which Beyer says will be an overstuffed hamburger with every topping imaginable.

The draft beers run $4 to $6.50, and the bar does several other specials, including beer by the pitcher, which runs $23 for domestic and $28 for premium.
