Memo to Barclays: We're Feeling Left Out

(All in good fun) Patch editors feel the golf tournament's sponsor may have missed a few key local hotspots.

Organizers for , who are bringing us the PGA Golf tournament at the storied next month, have offered some suggestions for the crowds expected to descend on our area, many from far, far away places, like New Jersey.

We at Patch were a bit surprised by the scope of their suggestions, which were included in a recent release for PGA fans and the press. They include:

Near Bethpage State Park:

  • (American) and (Mexican) both on Main Street, Farmingdale.
  • The (Brew Pub) on New Highway.
  • The - for the fondue set - on Broadhollow Road.

There were others, all worthy venues. But then we noticed that the organizers might have been a bit geographically challenged.

The Barclays people directed visitors miles north to Jericho Turnpike, where volunteers are staying at the Best Western in Woodbury.

Barclays mentioned a wide variety of food choices ranging from the (Tex-Mex) to Nisen Sushi in Woodbury. The advisory to Barclay's patrons even states: "Jericho Turnpike is a busy road – lots of food options are available."

Thanks for the heads up.

Surely they didn't mean to, but we felt wounded, as if poor Plainview and Bethpage just didn't exist. Wouldn't Tiger just go wild at the ? Couldn't you see Phil Michelson chowing down at any one of our great delicatessens? Bubba Watson thowing back a brewski at ?

We would have hoped The Barclays first consulted Patch readers and editors on such an important issue facing golf fanatics, many of whom are simply unfamiliar with our ways here in Eastern Nassau County.

Golf Fans: We have these suggestions:

Get a local tattoo: A souvenir to last a lifetime is available at Tattoo Ritual in Farmingdale.

Get a real slice of pizza: Pick any local place and, if you're from outside the metropolitan area, it will be better than any pizza you'll ever have, anywhere, in America. Keep your deep-dish and other pretenders. Here, we're proud of the grease stains. Bring one home on your souvenir Barclays tee-shirt.

Stop in at "A Taste of Long Island:" The products are made here, but bear flavors from around the world. There's and pickle varieties that will blow you away.

Take a drive to the old Grumman plant: Marvel at the place that built the that stalked the Japanese Navy in WWII; remember how Long Islanders that allowed men to walk on the moon. Visit the at in Farmingdale.

Bring your clubs: But forget the Black Course. have trouble with this monster which has played host to two U.S. Opens. Try the Red or the Yellow. You might even get a tee time.

And that's just a few local ideas: What did we leave out? We want to hear from our readers on this.

What local places of interest should we recommend for visitors of The Barclays tournament?

The Barclays has been a part of the PGA Tour since 1967 when Jack Nicklaus won the inaugural event at Westchester Country Club. Now, the event is the first of four playoff events to determine the FedEXCub, a season-long competition and a centerpiece of the PGA Tour.

Many of the PGA Tour's top golfers are expected to appear at the event, scheduled for Aug. 21-26. Organizers anticipate 35,000 people will visit the Bethpage Black course, which was designed by A.W. Tillinghast, and played host to the U.S. Open in 2002 and 2009.
