Bits and bites about Syosset/Woodbury eateries.

Franina (496-9770) has a three-course prix fixe lunch every day for $21.95. Appetizers may include homemade cavatelli with veal Bolognese sauce or cheese tortellini. Entrées include Romanian steak or striped bass oregananta. Dinner is $36 per person and antipasti include marinated white anchovies and lobster risotto; entrees include braised beef braciola and roasted veal tenderloin.

Angelina's II (364-8234) has been offering Pasta Tuesday's. $19.99 gets you a choice of pasta and a soup or salad to start. Try their homemade gnocchi bolognese or fusilli with baby shrimp, broccoli and sun-dried tomatoes. Monday through Friday they have a $12.95 lunch with pastas, dishes like chicken marsala trevesti or excellent sandwiches. The $24.95 three-course prix fixe available all night, Sunday through Thursday lets you choose from five appetizers and six entrees. Starters include baked clams. mussels bianco and chopped Italian salad. Entrées include baked eggplant lasagna, braised short ribs and wild salmon.

Galangal, the Thai-Japanese spot secreted in the back of the Coldwell Banker building next to Friendly's, offers diners a 20 percent discount with a  postcard available on their website. First timers here are always surprised by the opulent movie set of a room, centered around a dramatically lit waterfall. The Westchester-based chain-let, Haiku Asian Bistro, opened last year in Woodbury Town Plaza and has some interesting dishes difficult to find elsewhere on Long Island. Szechuan Peppercorn Chicken, for instance, contains the mouth-numbing spice that also provides the kick behind Peppercorn Squid. Szechuan Peppercorns are not spicy but will surprise with their unusual sensation. Malaysian Style Red Curry is some more rare fare. Both of these can be had for a midday pick-me-up for under 10 bucks on the lunch menu. For other exotica, try Vietnamese Salad with mango, jicama and crushed peanuts ,or Crispy Banana Shrimp Rolls.
