Update: Late May Opening Planned for Panera

PR rep confirms the popular cafe will open their doors on Jericho Turnpike in May.

Syosset will have to wait a little longer for cobblestone muffins, fresh brewed coffee and free WiFi. Panera Bread, originally planned to open their doors in mid-February, is now due to open in late May, according to Doherty Enterprises public relations representative Pat Friia.

According to Panera spokeswoman Kate Antonacci, the Syosset Panera on Jericho Turnpike will be a franchise cafe, owned an operated by Doherty Enterprises, Inc. rather than directly by Panera.

, 55 percent of Patch readers are excited for the popular eatery to open. 29 percent said they are happy the former home of Dom & Luigi's Smokehouse Pizzeria will finally be occupied. 14 percent felt it could have been replaced with something better.

Patch user optimistically said in his comment,

Whether you're excited for Panera or excited for what will come after Panera, you will only have to wait until around Memorial Day.

I'm curious as to what exactly they've been doing for the past several weeks, they originally started clearing out the inside completely, and now it appears they've been taking their time demolishing the building, cutting individual beams one at a time....why not just raze and start over?

Hmm not sure. It looked like the original building was going to be used at the beginning, but then we saw half the building was gone. Maybe they hit a snag with structural integrity but are trying to salvage as much as they can?

I'm not a big Panera fan, but where there's Panera, there's Chipotle - and word has it that the absolute best upscale-fast-food Mexican restaurant in the universe will be opening on the lot formerly occupied by the Bicycle Planet. And now that I've mentioned that, my educated guess is that you'll also be seeing a Five Brothers burger joint opening nearby, too.
