The Great Escape: Find an Oasis in Laurel Hollow

Have you ever sped past a garden center on the north side of 25A on your way to Huntington and wondered what was going on behind the lush greenery?

Today's escape we are taking a moment to stop at a little piece of "terra-heaven" on 25A known as Scarcella's Flowers, Greenhouse & Home

From the road, as you briskly pass by, a gazebo or luxuriant vegetation may catch your eye. And if you are like most folks, you've been wanting to stop in but haven't had the chance. Well, now is the time to pull over and wander around this verdant center that has established deep roots here for over 70 years.

Start by entering the shop through the doors of their quaint cottage-like structure. Inside you will not only find plants but you will have the opportunity to meander through vignette after vignette of finely styled room settings offering unique tabletop and decorative accessories, all following an outdoor theme.

Towards the back of the shop you will enter attached antique greenhouses removed from Gold Coast estates decades ago. Originally they were closed off to the public and brought in to grow flowers during a time before the days of world-wide overnight shipping. They are now used to display assorted merchandise as well as flowers and plants. In the east-most greenhouse the sounds of chirping birds will surely catch your attention, follow the squawks and tweets to the aviary and you may even get to see a nest with an egg or two.

Both inside and out take note of the rotating art gallery. The owner, Randy Statham, is passionate about promoting the sculpture of local Island artists. Mainly used for exterior decorating, they can look just as good inside as they do out.

After touring the inner space, head outside to explore the plantings. What was once open fields have been transformed to manicured display gardens used like a showroom of sorts for clients to glean ideas for their homes.

Beyond the gazebo and heading east to the next area, you will come across their cutting gardens. This is what sets them apart from typical florists mainly because they cut interesting and unusual flowers here and incorporate them into arrangements that are beyond customers' expectations.

On the opposite side of this two and half acre strip of land are outdoor rooms to uncover. To the west of the building are monument style stone sculptures, a fountain stocked with fish, and unusual pathways.  Have a seat on one of their many granite-slab benches to take in the surroundings.

In addition to all of this, they offer wedding and party planning as well as interior and landscape/container design services.
