The Great Escape: Stroll Historic Main Street

Cold Spring Harbor's Main Street is a walk back in time.

Here's our weekly hourly getaway for busy moms and dads who may need some time for themselves.

Today's escape is taking a journey along Route 25A or Northern Boulevard heading to an original Main Street. Most of us are familiar with this route, but when you come to the historic village of Cold Spring Harbor the hustle and bustle of this well-travelled road takes a turn towards the early days of America.

This charming section is worth a stop, for there is plenty to do and see in the size equivalent to two city blocks.

Before you enter into the downtown area, pull over at the famous natural "cold spring" and fill up your water bottle. Follow the road a short distance and turn right into the municipal parking lot located in the center of town.

Start your walking tour at the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA) on the west end of the street, look beyond the building to enjoy a scenic view of the harbor. As you continue on, peek into the various quaint shops that sell clothing, jewelry, novelties and curiosities, and gourmet goodies.  If hunger sets in, sit outside and have a bite at the local restaurants; pause to people watch.

Along the south part of the street in the middle of the block make sure to check out the Fire House museum, a 100 year old firehouse moved to this location. As your walk comes to an end,  you will see the Whaling Museum and the Dolan DNA Learning center.

In some cases, you can walk paths behind the stores to get a glimpse of the early restored architecture of a time forgotten and see some lush gardens including beautiful brick pathways that lead you back out to Main Street.

In such a small, cozy area you will get to experience so much and if you time it just right you may be lucky enough to spot some feathered residents flocking to this town - wild turkeys.

This seaside town, dating back to the 1600's, is the perfect place to clear your head and get some exercise, too.
