Weigh In on Rite Aid Replacement

What could successfully replace the soon-to-be closed Syosset pharmacy?

News broke last week that the was closing its doors. A spokesperson confirmed that the

The final closing date will depend upon how long the current liquidation sale lasts.

disappointed residents.

"So depressing when another local 'go to' business closes," wrote Patch reader .

Some felt another pharmacy would be most fitting, but worried it would meet the same fate.

"It would be nice to see Walgreens or a local grocery market go in there but I fear it will lie vacant for years. I hope I am wrong," wrote .

What type of business could survive on the Rite Aid property? Is another pharmacy the answer or should the store become a grocery store like it was years ago? What kind of store would not work in that position?

My brother works in Menchies across the street and he said he heard that rumor has it that Walgreens is going to replace it.

I commented in another thread that I'd like to see an "affordable" grocery store that carries, at the very least, the basic items we are always running to Stop & Shop or King Kullen for. However, to try to turn Syosset's drab retail environment around, I have visions of a "variety store" that carries all kinds of household items, toys, etc. Years ago, a 5 & 10 Cent store in the same strip as the present-day Rite Aid did very well until the new wave of Syosset residents became enamored with bigger, colder chain stores that made no apologies for squashing all the Mom-and-Pop businesses downtown. Maybe now that so many of us are living paycheck to paycheck, we'd be open to a store like that again?

I think Walgreen's would do very well here, although they may feel their Plainview store is too close to us to put another one here. I agree with Papa Tom about the variety store. I remember shopping there for everything except food.

Papa Tom, I agree. Bring back the old 5 & 10. Or, I know I'm dreaming, but I would sure love to have a bookstore back in the area.

Rumor in town - Walgreens will be taking over the entire corner where Starbucks is located on Jericho. Do not expect any replacement soon for the Rite Aid location due to excessive rent.

Great feedback everyone. Keep the suggestions coming. We're still fishing around to see who might replace Rite Aid, but it's still early in the process.
