5 Quick Tips For College Essay Writing - #2: Write First, Edit Later

When it comes to writing, we are almost always our own worst critics.  So many students expect themselves to produce pure, uninhibited brilliance the first time their fingers stroke the keys, but that is almost never the way good essay writing works.  Crafting a compelling essay is a process, and the best writing is often plucked and reworked from stream-of-consciousness efforts.  Students should try to refrain from editing themselves before allowing their creativity to warm up, which means not judging any writing until at least a few paragraphs make it to the page.  What doesn’t work can always be cut, and it is much easier to work with an overabundance of words and ideas than nothing at all.
