Dems Unite Behind Gugerty

Press Release
By: Campaign to Elect Dave Gugerty L.D. 18 Legislator

The race for Nassau County Legislative District 18th heats up as Dave Gugerty garners the support of local elected officials.  This November the residents of Oyster Bay, Locust Valley, Bayville, East Hills, East Norwich, Syosset, Woodbury, Brookville, Muttontown, and the surrounding areas will have a chance to elect a non-incumbent as the 18th legislative district is brand new created during the most recent round of redistricting.

The new district is made up of three former legislative districts currently represented by Judy Jacobs, Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, and Wayne Wink.  Each one of them is proud to support their colleague Dave Gugerty who is currently the Chief of Staff at the Nassau County Legislature.

Legislator Judy Jacobs one of the longest serving legislators in Nassau County, has known Dave Gugerty for many years. He served her and her Democratic colleagues as counsel, and now as Chief of Staff.  She had this to say about Dave’s campaign:

"Dave's career in public service shows a strong record of not only coming up with great ideas but also finding ways to implement them. His presence as a County Legislator will add a solid voice advocating for sound fiscal governance while working to improve the quality of life for the residents of his district."

The other portion of the new 18th District is from Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton’s old seat.   Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton is a known environmental activist fighting the Mangano administration over the clear cutting of hundreds of healthy trees in the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy.   She had this to say about Dave Gugerty potential as a Legislator:

“Dave has a tremendous knowledge of government that is equaled only by his commitment to the environment.  As Chief of Staff, his advice has been indispensable on crucial policy initiatives, such as the Environmental Bond acts which helped preserve two hundred acres of open space, the banning of toxic 'fracking' wastewater in local sewage treatment plants, and the “complete streets”' concept that promotes non-auto transportation through better safety planning.  His environmental achievements are one of many reasons Nassau needs more legislators like Dave Gugerty.”

Although a relatively small part of the district was previously represented by Deputy Minority Leader Wayne Wink, the Village of East Hills is the second most densely populated area in the now 18th district.  This makes it just as important as the rest of the district and not an appendage as some call it.  Legislator Wink is not running for Legislator this year as he running for Town of North Hempstead Town Clerk, has worked with Dave during his tenure at the legislature said;

"I've had the privilege of working with Dave on various local laws over the years while in the County Legislature.  I can say without reservation that his grasp and understanding of both the inner workings of government and the nuances of the issues affecting Nassau County is second to none. I am pleased to endorse him because I know he will be a terrific Legislator."

The new 18th overlaps Assembly member Chuck Lavine’s district which he has represented since 2004.  Having known Dave personally as both a community activist and friend Assembly member Lavine had this to say about Mr. Gugerty:

“As a former Bayville Village Trustee he understands the inner workings of government and his knowledge of the district and the issues is truly admirable.  Dave’s experience, integrity, and tireless work ethic will make him a very effective Legislator for the residents of his district.”

Representative Steve Israel who represents the 3rd district in New York, which encompasses the entire 18th Legislative district has also thrown his support behind Dave Gugerty and had this to say about his candidacy:

"Dave Gugerty is a dedicated public servant and is devoted to serving our community. I am confident that Dave will make a distinguished addition to the Nassau County Legislature, and I am proud to endorse his candidacy."
