Environmental Groups Endorse Gugerty

Leading environmental groups on Long Island have endorsed Dave Gugerty for County Legislator in Nassau County’s 18th district.  From Lattingtown to Laurel Hollow south to Syosset and East Hills the district encompasses numerous parks and preserves and roughly thirty miles of coastline on Nassau County’s north shore.

The New York League of Conservation Voters (NYLCV), the Long Island Environmental Voter’s Forum (LIEVF), and Sierra Club of Long Island all endorsed the candidacy of Dave Gugerty citing his qualifications and commitment to the environment.

His personal commitment to the environment is surpassed by the work he has done as an elected Trustee in Bayville and legal counsel to the Nassau Legislature.  As a Trustee, Dave greatly expanded the curbside recycling program and educated residents about kitchen composting.  If elected he would encourage the further expansion of recycling programs to include all plastics, card board, and chip board thus eliminating significant amounts of waste from entering our landfills and sewers.

As legal counsel to the Legislature, Mr. Gugerty helped draft and implement the Environmental Bond Acts which preserved nearly 200 acres of open space in important aquifer recharge areas, across Nassau County.  Mill Neck, Oyster Bay Cove, and Old Brookville are only some of the places in the 18th district that benefitted from the purchases.

Long Island is on the front lines of climate change as demonstrated by the recent unprecedented super storms which stroke Long Island.  Nassau has never been more vulnerable to tidal flooding and storm surges then now.  As an elected official, Mr. Gugerty has demonstrated his ability to combat these problems.  As a Trustee following a major Nor’easter, he spearheaded the construction of a sand dune to reduce the flooding from Soundside Beach into the east end of Bayville.  Dave is eager to bring innovative and low cost solutions such as this to Nassau County.

“I am proud to have the endorsement of the New York League of Conservation Voters, Long Island Environmental Voter’s Forum and the Sierra Club of Long Island.  These are important organizations whose priority is to preserve and protect our environment and natural resources, two things which are very important to me as well.  Living on the North Shore of Long Island for my entire life, I can appreciate the natural beauty the land and water adds to the quality of life for the residents.  This is one reason why I am running for the 18th Legislative District - to continue to work to make sure that the environment we care about will be protected and be available for future generations to enjoy. I look forward to working with the all these excellent environmental groups in achieving this goal." - Dave Gugerty, Candidate for Nassau County Legislature, 18th District
