Update: Earthquake Felt in Syosset; No Damage or Injuries Reported

As a precaution, the Syosset Library will be closed for the rest of Tuesday, following the 5.8 Earthquake in Virginia.

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake occured in Virginia at 1:51 p.m., according to reports, with tremors felt as far north as New England.

Syosset Fire Department officials said they received several calls from concerned residents, but no reports of any injuries or damage. Officials from the Town of Oyster Bay also confirmed that there were no earthquake-related problems reported in the town.

The was evacuated Tuesday afternoon and will be closed for the remainder of the day, according to library officials. Officials said on the library answering machine that no fines would be charged to late items and that the library would re-open on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Jackson Avenue construction seems to be unaffected by the quake, as workers were working on the road around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Residents from across Long Island said they felt the shock, especially those in office buildings.

"I was in Melville, on the 2nd floor of an office building and it was shaking pretty good," said resident and Syosset Patch contributor Amy Platt on the Syosset Facebook page.

"The whole building in Syosset was shaking," said Frank, @Tapout1375 on Twitter. "It was surprising, the floor felt like it was rippling, than the guy in the office next to me his water starting spilling."

One local resident said she working off of Crossways Park Drive in Syosset when the earthquake occurred, and said she thought the shaking was due to construction and building renovations being done in the area.

"My chair in wheels actually moved with me sitting in it," said Patricia Cunningham on Facebook. "Then I got a text from my sister in Virginia and she told me it was definitely an earthquake."
