Five Things to Prepare for Winter Now

A few things to keep in mind before the real winter weather arrives.

1. Do a once over of your wintry supplies and make sure things like antifreeze are securely stashed away from children and pets. Be sure to clean up any leaks as well because just a few drops of antifreeze can cause serious, irreversible illnesses in pets.

2. You promised yourself you'd get a new ice scraper for the car last year. Well, now is the time to get a new one, not in the middle of a pre-storm panic. Stock your car with storm essentials, like a blanket, jumper cables, flashlight and take a look at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's checklist for preparedness.

3. If your pets are outdoorsy, be sure to wipe their paws when they come indoors. Sidewalk salt can get caught in paws. (While you're at it, grab an extra bag of Fluffy's kitty litter and leave it in your car. It creates friction on the ground if your car gets stuck in the snow.)

4. If you prefer a run in the over an hour on the treadmill, be sure to cover all exposed skin. Toes, fingers and ears are the most vulnerable spots for frostbite, so be sure to cover up!
