Jericho Turnpike Slowed by Early-Morning Wreck

Icy roads led to accident, but no one was hurt.

Black ice was the culprit in a multi-car accident that slowed down the commute on Jericho Turnpike Tuesday morning.

Syosset resident Kayvon Fathi, 25, was heading westbound between Robbins Lane and The Horizon development on the way to his job in Brooklyn around 6:25 a.m. As he was heading up an incline, a slick spot caused his Ford pickup truck to fishtail, and he went into oncoming traffic. He first made contact with an 18-wheeler before the back of his truck hit the Nissan sedan of Queens resident Audrey Baker, who was heading into LI for work.

"I thought I was going to get to work early," Fathi said.

Nobody got to work early, as Nassau County Police set off flares over a large stretch and closed off one lane going in each direction. Besides the need to clean up the wreck, public works came in to spread salt over the cordoned-off area.

There were no apparent injuries.
