Killer of Syosset Teacher Gets Five to 10 Years

Jeremy Weckerle was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison for the vehicular manslaughter of Paul Gordon.

The driver who, while high on cancer painkillers, will spend up to 10 years in prison, according to the Nassau County District Attorney's office.

Jeremy Weckerle, 33 of North Babylon, was convicted of second degree manslaughter by Judge Alan Honorof and sentenced to five to 10 years in prison Monday for his role in the death of Paul Gordon on Sept. 14, 2010.

“Paul Gordon was a mentor, educator, and friend to many people, and his tragic death could have been prevented,” Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said in a statement.

On Sept. 14, 2010, Weckerle got into his Nissan Pathfinder while high on Xanax and Fentanyl, a powerful painkiller often given to late-stage cancer patients, Rice said. After weaving dangerously in and out of traffic on Route 107 in Old Brookville, Weckerle struck Gordon's Toyota Avalon head on. Gordon was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead an hour later.
