May 12: Weather Update, Casino Royale Fundraiser

A rundown of events and happenings in your town.

Sometimes, it can be hard to keep up with all that is going on in your town. We all have fliers and post-it notes laying around to remind us about important community events. But with this daily post, hopefully you won't need them.

Here are just "5 Things" we think you ought to know about for Thursday:

  1. Thinking of calling in sick today? It may be a good day to do it! Expect mostly sunny skies with a high temperature around 68 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
  2. John Theissen Children's Foundation of Wantagh will hold its 9th annual tonight at the Woodbury Country Club from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. The fundraiser benefits the foundation's Back to School Program and Family Fun Center. This year's event will honor PIX Morning News Anchor Jill Nicolini; tickets can be bought at this website, and a special thanks to for posting the event. If you have an important event to add, you can do so here in our calendar.
  3. Did you know today is Katharine Hepburn's birthday? The famous actress passed away back in 2003 at the age of 96. She starred in classic films such as The African Queen and Morning Glory. The will be celebrating her birthday today at 2 p.m. with a film lecture by film historian and professor, Philp Harwood.
  4. There is a program for parents called taking place at the Portledge School, in Locust Valley tonight at 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
