Morrell to WJC Congregants: Demand Accounting Records

Woodbury Jewish Center continues fight to break ties with Morrell, who wants to end litigation and begin conversation.

Scott Morrell, owner of Morrell Caterers, is telling Woodbury Jewish Center congregants to request the temple's financial records. After WJC refused to back down in their , Morrell is urging the synagogue's congregation to ask for accounting records to illustrate how much money is being spent on litigation.

In June, a judge granted Morrell Caterers' a preliminary injunction, allowing them to stay put until further notice, said a Morrell spokesperson. Since then, the caterer and Woodbury Jewish Center have been in talks aimed at ultimately replacing litigation with conversation, said the spokesperson.

Despite these meetings, however, Woodbury Jewish Center has decided to move forward with the case. In April, the temple's representatives said they had no intention of giving in and they would move forward with legal proceedings to evict Morrell Caterers from the premises.

"There is nothing to be gained with further litigation except to make the attorneys wealthier while costing both parties more legal fees," said Morrell in a statement.

The dispute surrounding Morrell Caterers and Woodbury Jewish Center when two former Morrell employees filed a suit against their former boss. The two alleged that employees prepared kosher and non-kosher foods in the same vicinity on Morrell's orders. Rabbis from surrounding synagogues as news broke that Morrell was accused of violating Jewish kosher laws that govern the preparation of food. Woodbury Jewish Center, however, has tried to end their contract that extends through 2029.
