No. 50: Find the Jewel in Woodbury

Don't be coy, come and see the Koi at Jewel of the Sea

For this month's 100 Things to Do in Syosset we are checking out an indoor Koi pond located at Jewel of the Sea in the back part of the Country Square shopping center, also known as Duggan's strip mall. Entering the establishment, immediately to your right you will see swarms of fish circling in a mini pond. While you are waiting to have your whole-fish prepped, relax by this unique water feature.

If you are hungry for seafood, this is definitely your go-to place for all things from the ocean. And the sea is exactly the scent that hits you while inside, instead of the typical fishy odor found at shops of this ilk. Whether you want to create a fish dish yourself or try the cooked entrees or prepared salads, you will find a plethora to choose from.

Opposite the fresh fish counter, is a designated sushi bar complete with a TV so if you decide to come for a roll or two, you can catch up on sports or the news. Tables are also provided for indulging in their prepared foods.

The store has been at this location for a little over two years and next-door is the newly opened Victoria's Market, under the same ownership, which was formerly Van Sise Farms. But here you can also get prepared meals, fresh fruit and veggies, bakery items made on the premises, and lots more. They have a few signature items not found in most markets, such as freshly prepared zucchini linguini (100% vegetable, no wheat) and broccoli coleslaw.

Owner, Luigi "Louie" Novello, takes pride in providing our community with the freshest of fish. Formerly, he had a Roslyn Heights and Syosset location but due to the high demand for quality seafood, especially for his wholesale clients, he had to find the right location to suit his needs for expansion. So in the lower level, not open to the public, is a cheerfully renovated area with walk-in clam and fish coolers, lobster tanks (which can hold up to 4,000 pounds of lobsters), and prep areas.

Some of you may recall that during storm Sandy, this strip mall was lucky enough to get power within 24 hours, understanding the hardship for those off-the-grid, Novello generously provided unlimited ice at no charge so that folks were able to preserve their perishables. So come by to say thanks, check out the tanks, and feed the Koi.
