Patch Picks: Cinco De Mayo

Here are some fun party ideas.

This week's Patch Picks has some fun party ideas for you. Since Cinco de Mayo is coming up soon, here are some things you can do to celebrate.

1. Wear red, white and green, the Mexican flag colors. If you’re planning a party, use red, white and green as the theme colors.

2. Break a piñata: Nothing says celebration more than breaking something open and getting the candy inside. To buy party favors, sombrero’s, piñata’s and red, white and green table cloths you can go to Party City, located at 8063 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. They have Cinco De Mayo supplies…and more!

3. Make a Mexican Martini (recipe below):

  • 2 to 3 ounces tequila
  • 1 ounce orange flavored liquor
  • ½ ounce orange juice (pulp free)
  • splash of 7-Up
  • sweet & sour mix (approximately 8 ounces)
  • squeeze of fresh lime juice
  • skewered jalapeno-stuffed cocktail olives
  • Fill a 16-ounce cocktail shaker halfway with ice and add the first four ingredients. Fill the shaker the rest of the way with sweet & sour mix. Shake until contents are mixed and chilled. Strain into martini glasses, and serve with skewered olives.

You can get the supplies to make the Mexican Martini at Syosset Discount Wines and Liquors at 35 Ira Rd in Syosset.

4. Do a Mexican dance, like the hat dance. On Youtube they show you how to even do the dance! So put on some music, get a sombrero and have some fun!

5. There is a Cinco De Mayo Fiesta in the Union Square Ballroom. Tickets are necessary but the money raised goes to helping under-served children get the education they need. The Fiesta is at Union Square Ballroom: 27 Union Square West, New York, NY 10003. To RSVP or get more information call (212) 645-1802.
