Syosset Commuters: No Beef With Late Trains

Riders say LIRR gets there on time.

Friday's 7:23 a.m. train from Syosset to Penn Station showed up at...7:23 a.m.

According to those who regularly take the Long Island Rail Road from Syosset, that's the rule and not the exception.

A recent New York Times article that questioned the high on-time rates claimed by New York-area commuter rails has received a great deal of attention. But at the Syosset LIRR station Friday morning, commuters were complaining about everything but when trains show up.

"In general the train is always on time or close," said Syosset's Gary. "I find the Syosset station to be one of the better ones. They just need to work on how much it costs to ride the train."

Joe from Laurel Hollow has been riding the Syosset train since January and strained to remember one or two times when the train was late.

"It seems to be that there just aren't ever enough seats," he added.

Another commuter, Marina, echoed Joe's concerns about seats–especially in the afternoon–but said she never seems to have an issue with tardiness. And another woman who wouldn't give her name said the train is always on time.

The Times reported that on weekday mornings, 1 in 10 trains entering Pennsylvania Station arrived late, two-thirds by 10 minutes or more.
